When to buy your plants

At Dunscar we carry a wide range of plants throughout the year. Indeed we think we have the most diverse range of plants of any garden centre in Lancashire. However, some varieties are subject to seasonal availability.

Hardy plants in pots can be planted all year round if the ground is not frozen, too wet or too dry. Nevertheless, to get the widest choice of a group of plants it is best to select them in the month in which we receive the new stock. By way of example, all roses for the following year are lifted from the ground, pruned and potted in the Autumn. Whilst roses will still be available and ready for planting in the Summer, the selection of varieties available will naturally be narrower than when they first came in and out of stock situations will prevail until the Autumn.

To assist you to obtain the best choice of plants, we hope the following calendar of “when to buy what” will be useful.

June & July Impulse plants for filling gaps, ie shrubs and herbaceous plants in flower, eg Potentilla and Platycodon

August Spring flowering bulbs

September Autumn bedding, eg wallflowers and winter pansies

October Roses, conifers, Rhododenrons, pot grown ornamental and fruit trees
