Plants for year round colour
Here is a selection of plants our plant area staff consider suitable for providing all year round colour in the garden. For other ideas visit our “plants of the month” section of the plant area.
Helleborus orientalis – A welcome Spring flower in the garden producing pretty pendant saucer-shaped flowers from February to April.
Pieris japonica ‘Valley Valentine’ – This compact shrub bears deep dusky-red flowers. It is ideal for a patio container with lime-free compost in full sun or light shade.
Euphorbia amygdaloides ‘Rubra’ – Producing deep plum foliage in neat mounds, it also bears tall clusters of lime green reddish tinged flowers in the Spring.
Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’ – In May and June this lovely “mock orange” is smothered with highly fragrant flowers with splashes of purple at the centre. It is a low maintenance shrub for a sunny border.
Papaver orientale – Ideal for a mixed border, it produces bristly green leaves and flamboyant orange/scarlet flowers with a bold black centre.
Potentilla fruticosa ‘Goldfinger’ – This popular deciduous variety (ie it drops its leaves in Autumn) produces a showy display of golden yellow flowers between July and October.
Crocosmia Lucifer Salvia nemorosa ‘East Friesland’ – This plant bears flame red flowers on tall arching stems with strap like leaves. For maximum impact plant in bold drifts in a sunny, sheltered site.
Salvia nemorosa ‘East Friesland’ – Slender spires of intense violet/blue flowers will appear from July to September above clumps of mud-green leaves. It copes well in the Sun or in light shade and the blooms are a magnet for butterflies and bees.
