A Natural Spectacle (Photography Competition 2012)

Whether you’re a gardening enthusiast, a photography enthusiast or both, we invite you to submit entries to the 2012 Dunscar Photography Competition.  This year the theme is ‘A Natural Spectacle’.  We’re looking for visually striking images featuring wildlife, landscapes or plants in the UK.  The competition is split into two age categories, 16 and under and 17 and over.  Judges Shaun and Hilary Lewis and Simon Bond will choose the ten best photographs from each category and these will then go to a public vote both in store and on our Facebook page.  Entries can be submitted by post by writing your name, address, telephone number and a brief description of where it was taken on the back of the photograph and sending it to 2012 Dunscar Photography Competition, 106-116 Southport New Road, Tarleton, Lancashire, PR4 6HY.  We regret that entries by post cannot be returned.  Entries can also be submitted by email to 2012dunscarphotography@gmail.com by giving us the same information and attaching your photograph in JPEG (,jpg) format. Files may be up to 5MB in size.  Entries will be accepted up to and including Sunday 2nd September. Full terms and conditions can be found elsewhere on our website but the following is a summary.

Rules of the Competition

Garden of the Year Competition

In 2006 we started running our own Garden of the Year competition for our customers. Unfortunately, some wet summers have prevented us from running the competition every year since, but we have seen some marvellous gardens in all shapes and sizes. Here are some of the highlights.

2006
Mr Peter Thornton of Formby was our first winner. Peter is an extremely keen gardener, spends four to five hours a week working on his garden and has been a customer at Dunscar Garden Centre for over 30 years. The judges were particularly impressed with Peter’s exceptional lawns, the quality of which would have even graced a bowling green.

2007
Our first Garden of the Year competition in 2006 only ran in the Southport area. However, it was so popular that in 2007 we extended it to include the Preston area in recognition of the fact that we were attracting many more customers from a wider geographical base. The clear winner was Mrs Dorothy Rigby of Lostock Hall. Our judges were especially impressed by her use of available space with many interesting areas. The garden was very user friendly, turning a relatively small, angular space into an apparently endless jungle with some magnificent plants. Competition for the 2nd prize was closely fought but eventually won by Mr John Smith of Southport. Considering the awful weather in June and July we were impressed by the commendable efforts of all the entrants.

2012
Applications for the 2012 competition will be announced in February 2012.
