We presently employ 28 members of staff and regularly seek exceptional people to help us expand the business. We deliberately employ a mix of age groups to improve team harmony. We value the maturity, work ethic and experience of our older staff and they set a good example to the younger members of the team. Presently we are fortunate to have 3 members of staff in their 60s. However, we could not run our business without our more youthful staff either. We have been very lucky with our young team. They offer energy, enthusiasm, fresh ideas and a capacity for hard work. Currently 12 of our staff are under the age of 25. If you are interested in joining our team then please click here for details of current vacancies.
Spotlight on Georgina Burrows
Georgina Burrows joined us in March 2008, having previously worked for a year at a rival garden centre. She quickly proved her worth and last year we promoted her to supervise the garden care and giftware areas. Having done this successfully and demonstrated a flair for organisation and visual merchandising, early this year we promoted her to become the Assistant Retail Sales Manager. Outside her work at Dunscar, Georgina spends her time looking after her horse, walking her dog and visiting France. She is also a fan of Weber barbecues.
Spotlight on David Ryding – Delivery Driver and Landscaper
Those of our customers who have received deliveries at home from us will recognise our delivery driver, David Ryding. However, you may also have seen him out and about all round the garden centre maintaining the show gardens, lawns and grounds. An ex landscaper, David can turn his hand to many tasks, ranging from “fettling”, to helping on the nursery and plant area. He is our manual handling trainer and we hope to send him on a fork lift driver course at the end of the Summer. David is a keen countryman and in his spare time enjoys gardening and coarse fishing.
Q. How long have you been working at Dunscar and why did you apply to work here?
“I’ve been here since March 2005. As an ex landscaper and customer I appreciated the quality of the plants and liked the feel of the centre. It seemed a friendly place with a definite commitment to being a proper plant centre.”
Q. What are the highlights of your job?
“I am lucky to work with a cheerful and enthusiastic team on the plant area and I enjoy working outdoors. Although I don’t have enough time to spend on the grounds and show gardens in the peak season, I take a great pride in seeing them at their best in the Summer.”
Q. What are your favourite plants?
“I like several different plants and am always interested in new varieties. I suppose my favourites are those with lots of colour such as Acers, herbaceous perennials and Fuschias.”
Q. Do you have any good tips for inexperienced gardeners?
“When planning your garden, always leave space for some evergreen shrubs to provide form and colour year round, and for seasonal bedding to add splashes of colour. And always buy your plants from Dunscar!”
The Fourth Generation at Dunscar
Customers may be pleased to see the family connection of the business being maintained down to the fourth generation this Summer. James and Tom Archer, the grandsons of Eric and Margaret Vickers, have both been spending their university vacations working at Dunscar. James has just completed an honours degree course in Geology from St. Andrew’s University. Whilst he seeks a job as a geologist he is helping us out with the design and re-launch of our e-commerce website www.hilaryclare.com. Tom is presently a student at Edinburgh University where he is studying Sports Science and Recreational Management. On graduating Tom hopes to carve a career in sports management or sponsorship. Both James and Tom are sports fanatics and accomplished soccer players.
