Outdoor Plants – The Jewel in our Crown
 The Nursery and Outdoor Plant Areas are managed by Dan Connor and his small staff of plant enthusiasts. Dan joined us 5 years ago as a Plant Sales Assistant but, having demonstrated his passion for plants and gained a horticultural qualification with us, he was promoted to manage the department in 2008. He is now in charge of nurturing carefully about 22,000 plants of over 400 varieties and has been a great success in answering listeners’ gardening questions live on BBC Radio Lancashire. In his spare time Dan is a keen collector of Himalayan plants.
For over 60 years we have enjoyed an excellent reputation for the quality of our plants. All 3 generations of the Vickers family have been both passionate about plants and keen gardeners themselves. As a result we pride ourselves not just in the variety of plants on offer for sale but also in their quality. Every one of our plants is carefully nurtured and watered by hand by our dedicated plant care staff, each one of whom shares our passion and commitment to quality. This goes some way to explaining why we have been runners up in the National Retail Nursery of the Year Awards and received an “outstanding” grading by the Garden Centre Association for our plant area and nursery.
 Keen gardeners will quickly spot the quality of our plants and the excellent value we offer. The occasional or novice gardener will appreciate the chance to view our mature show gardens to see for themselves how a plant will turn out. With a very enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable staff we can also offer advice on selecting the right plants for your garden and caring for them afterwards.
With a working nursery on site many of our plants are home grown. This not only guarantees the quality of the plants but also ensures they are available to the customer right through a busy  bank holiday weekend. Where we do buy in plants for sale we only do so from the best growers who have consistently proved themselves to be real plants people, and we are ruthless about quality. Many of our customers have commented that the plants in our sale area are often of a higher standard than the best of some of our competitors. We don’t force on our plants and nor do we release them for sale until the appropriate time of the year. As all our regular customers will testify, our plants really do grow and we are happy to guarantee this.
